What and Why is it Important?
The Right Kind of Nutrition
Hidden Hunger is a global epidemic caused by lack of nutrients needed for proper body maintenance. For years, the world has continued to approach the definition of hunger in a purely quantitative way. Although most of humanity goes to sleep each night with a sensation of a full stomach, their body is still awake and hungry; craving the right kind of nutrition.
Most of us operate from a premise that calorie content is the ultimate answer for hunger. Because of this mindset, staple food crops (carb rich sources) such as rice, corn and wheat have become the primary source of food intake throughout the world. Such a diet lacks essential micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals required for healthy bodily function. Over time, this type of calorie-based consumption puts the body into a state of sickness.
A Solution to Hidden Hunger
At Almeda, we are partnering to fight hidden hunger, by creating supplements designed to tackle the challenges arising out of this crisis. It is our mission to support the world’s return to health, one person at a time.
Lack of essential nutrients triggers a state of oxidative stress. This causes a rise in the levels of free radicals and lowers the levels of antioxidant defenses.
Free radicals (reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species) are generated as a byproduct of various physiochemical reactions within our bodies. A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary in order for us to remain healthy. If free radicals overwhelm the body’s ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues.
Free radicals can adversely affect lipids, proteins, and DNA and is known to trigger a number of chronic diseases and inflammation. Antioxidants can assist in coping with oxidative stress. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from inducing tissue damage by preventing the formation of radicals, scavenging them, or by promoting their decomposition.
The most significant factor in fat storage is the level of insulin in the blood. Insulin increases the storage of fat in lipid cells, and prevents them from releasing fat to use for energy (lipid metabolism). After consuming food that lacks wholesome nutrients (especially carb-rich foods), the body’s blood sugar levels begin to rise. This signals the pancreas to release insulin-which aids in bringing glucose levels back down to “normal”. However, if glucose levels stay elevated over long periods of time, fat tissues develop insulin sensitivity. This sensitivity does not allow fat to be metabolized properly- leading to weight gain.
